Following several cassette efforts released on a clutch of discreet tape labels in the U.S. — most notably Boston’s Private Archive — Nick Klein ultimately makes his way to the European audience by means of a boisterous and deafening five-track 12-inch for Unknown Precept. Live recorded last year behind the closed doors of his bedroom in Brooklyn, Failed Devotee comes as Klein’s debut vinyl release and shows the American producer (also a dashing country music aficionado) at his finest. Making much of his ability to improvise acute muscular narratives over the fetid, slowed and throwed proto-techno meanderings. Invoking whirring synth operations over hard-boiled analog rhythms and slo-mo heavy infectious kicks that prompt primal action to the ‘floor, the New Yorker always manages to assemble and hold together far-out, compelling industrial-tinged maneuvers, to which he alone seems to know the exact formula.
